Course details
Cambridge Latin Workshop for teachers. Details of the course will be available soon. Topics at past workshops have included

  • reading methodology;
  • teaching stages;
  • assessment;
  • online environment;
  • materials available to use;
  • activities to reinforce learning;
  • transitioning to authentic literature

Each workshop is tailored to the needs of the participants based on their feedback.

Volunteers Wanted!

Volunteers are needed to assist with conference registration in two shifts on Thursday (15/15), Friday (15/10), and Saturday (5/5) of the event. There are also a few spots to volunteer for special events: the SCS Presidential Panel (1), the SCS Play (1-2), and the SCS Plenary Session (1-2).

Volunteers who work 8 hours will be given free conference registration as a “thank you” for your service.

2013 AP Summer Institute @ Episcopal, Baton Rouge

Our registration is up and running for the APSI this summer and we will be offering two Foreign Language courses.

AP Latin will run from Tuesday, June 18th to Friday, June 21st so that interested participants will not have a conflict with the ACL meeting in Memphis. Our instructor will be Mary Pendergraft of Wake Forest University who has experience as the Chief Reader for the AP Latin Exam.

AP Spanish Language and Composition will run from Monday, June 24th to Thursday, June 27th and will be taught by Thomas Soth. This will be an important course because it has just gone through redesign and May of 2014 will be the first year that the redesigned exam is administered.

American Academy at Rome needs applications

I need your help getting word out to secondary school teachers that there is funding for them to attend the 2013 AAR Classical Summer School. Applications from secondary teachers are down this year, and it is due to the fact that the American Councils (ex-Fulbright) Italy Seminar Grants were canceled back in August. That was the primary funnel for getting secondary teachers into our program.

Please send let your networks, especially those that reach secondary teachers, know that we have funds and that the DEADLINE IS EXTENDED TO JANUARY 31.

Spread your enthusiasm for the ancient world to a new generation!

Ascanius: The Youth Classics Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the classical world in the elementary and middle school, is accepting applications for faculty positions at LatinSummer 2011 from now through February 10, 2011. Any high school or college Latin student is welcome to apply. LatinSummer is a two-week long program for students on the elementary and middle school levels. LatinSummer 2011 will run in Williamsburg, Virginia, from July 22 – August 5, 2011. Faculty members earn a small honorarium. All room and board costs, and all or part of travel costs, are paid for by the Institute.

David D. and Rosemary H. Coffin Fellowship for Travel in Classical Lands
In 2011 the American Philological Association (APA) will again award the David D. and Rosemary H. Coffin Fellowship for study and travel in classical lands. The Fellowship was established in 2004 by the friends and students of David and Rosemary Coffin to honor the skill, devotion, learning, and kindness with which they educated students at Phillips Exeter Academy for more than thirty years.

The Fellowship is intended to recognize secondary-school teachers of Greek or Latin who are as dedicated to their students as the Coffins themselves by giving them the opportunity to enrich their teaching and their lives through direct acquaintance with the classical world. It will support study in classical lands (not limited to Greece and Italy); the recipient may use it to attend an educational program in (e.g., American Academy, American School) or to undertake an individual plan of study or research. It may be used either for summer study or during a sabbatical leave, and it may be used to supplement other awards or prizes.

Candidates for the Fellowship must have been teaching Latin or Ancient Greek at the secondary level (grades 9-12) in North America as a significant part of their academic responsibilities for three years out of the five prior to the award. Membership in the APA is not a requirement for application, although it is expected that applicants will have demonstrated an active interest in the profession and in their own professional development. Selection will be made on the basis of written applications by the Coffin Fellowship Committee. The amount of the award for 2011 will be $2,500. Recipients of the award will be expected to file a written report on their use of the Fellowship, which the Association may include in one of its publications.

Applications should consist of

a) a curriculum vitae
b) a statement of how the Fellowship will be used and how it will further the applicant’s teaching
c) three letters of recommendation, at least one of them from the applicant;s chair or principal, and at least one from a former student.

Applicants should send four copies of the c.v., the statement, and the letters of recommendation to the APA Office so that they arrive in the Office no later than Monday, January 31, 2011.
